In 1990 appointed as Lecturer at the University of Bristol, subsequently promoted Reader and Professor. In 2003 appointed as professor of Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Sheffield 2007~2011 2015~ Head of Department of Chemistry at the University of Sheffield Lecture abstract: An octanuclear cubic M8L12 coordination cage binds a wide range of small organic guests in its central cavity. In water the principal driving force for guest uptake is the hydrophobic effect, and the thermodynamics of guest binding have been analysed in detail to allow quantitative understanding of the factors involved. Guest binding leads to a wide range of potential applications including (i) recognition and fluorescence-based sensing of chemical warfare agent simulants ; (ii) catalysed reactions of bound guests with rate enhancements of up to >105-fold ; pH dependent uptake and release of drug molecules ; and (iv) highly selective sorption of CO2 compared to N2 gas molecules in the solid state .
