Abstract: This talk will present my personal perspectives on the historical development, past success and future challenges of biaryl synthesis. Biaryl is an important skeleton of top selling pharmaceuticals including the cholesterol lowering drug, Lipitor. The synthetic difficulties facing the biaryl synthesis will be discussed. The success in noble transition metal catalyzed coupling has been recognized and awarded in the Nobel chemistry prize in 2010. The evolutional synthetic approaches, including the current demands in green chemistry and the societal needs, will be presented.
This is a general presentation NOT focusing on research results but gearing towards the evolutional nature and broader perspectives of chemistry. An interactive approach in presentation will be employed. Hopefully, you can take advantage of it to conceive your own ideas and to develop your individual ideas. Gifts will be given for active participants.
